Success Story: Career Discovery Day
Career Discovery Day-Southern
“It Starts Now” 8th Grade Career Discovery Day for Bryan County was held on January 8, 2019. A total of 11 schools and 1 charter school participated with 595 students attending and more than 55 volunteers assisting with the event.
Hosted by Southeastern OK State University (SOSU) this event gave students an opportunity to visit a college campus for the first time.
The event was divided into a morning and afternoon sessions and split by school districts. Each student attends an opening session, a general session which covers soft skills, such as budgeting and interview skills, three breakout sessions based on their career interest. A motivational speaker closes the event with the message of how important it is to stay in school and make good choices before you graduate.
Students are given three career choices to attend and find out if that career is of interest. Professionals in education, law enforcement and healthcare gave presentations on educational requirements, pathways, skills, and salary.
Pontotoc & Garvin Counties also held similar events.
